2010  Literary State Champions (3rd year straight!)

 

Back to back to back. That’s right! For the third consecutive year, Westwood’s Literary team has captured the Georgia Independent School Association State Championship. The competition was held March 16th at Valdosta State University. This is the fourth state title in six years, along with two first runner-up finishes.

On Friday, March 5th, Westwood won its sixth consecutive Region 3-A Literary title. The region competition was held at ABAC.

Literary Results State Meet

  • 1st Place – Rhetorical Essay – Sarah Holton – Sarah, a senior at Westwood, interpreted a poem written by John Patrick Shanley entitled “Doubt” Judges comments: “Great examples, good job of analyzing and discussing the idea of doubt, excellent word choice”
  • Runner Up (2nd place) Girls’ Solo – Gillian Ford – Gillian sang “Single Girl” and “Porque toco el Pandero” - Judges remarks “What a nice job, beautiful dynamics and pitch” This is the fourth year that Gillian has participated in Literary events.
  • Humorous Interpretation – Pate Council – Pate’s rendition of “Fisherman’s Luck” earned him 2nd place honors. Pate’s rendition of a story about a young boy who would do just about anything to keep his younger sister from going fishing was an audience favorite. Judges remarks “Great distinction between roles, good preparation and work on the piece”
  • Personal Essay – Joseph Dixon - Joseph’s essay about what you gain from an unsuccessful experience was enjoyed by the judges. Comments included “Good job at visualizing lessons learned from your examples” “Writing had a nice effect on the reader” Joseph was also a member of the Boys Quartet which placed 4th overall
  • Argumentative Essay – Annabelle Larkin – Annabelle’s essay on Healthcare Reform used good examples and clear details. “Great use of humor throughout” “You make your point without lessening or cheapening the ideas” were some of the comments given by judges. This was Annabelle’s second year competing in the state meet. She was Region 3A Champion both this year and last in the Argumentative Essay event.
  • 2nd runner up (third place) Duo Interpretation – Miller Singleton and Virginia Vereen - In the duo interpretation, Miller and Virginia performed a piece entitled “Cinderella Revisited” “Excellent kinesic changes and variations in both voice and movement, upbeat and entertaining” were a few of the judges comments
  • 4th place Westwood Quartet – Jamie Carnegie, Joseph Dixon, Tyler Sharp and Trent Hester sang “Till the Stars Fall From the Sky and Turkey in the Straw”
  • 5th Place Tyler Sharp – Boys Solo - Tyler sang “Alma del Core’ ” and “The Slighted Swain.”
  • John Vereen – International Extemporaneous Speaking – Vereen gave a speech on climate change
  • 6th Place – Erin Burnett – Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking – Erin gave a speech on the topic of gun control.
  • Kathryn Collins placed 6th in spelling

The Westwood Literary coordinator is Azalee Vereen. Music events are directed by Susan Akridge. Coaching in current events is given by James Lee Adams.

2009 One Act Play Wins Superior at State

The community performance of this wonderful musical will be Sunday, November 8th at 3pm in the Westwood auditorium. We are very proud of our cast of OZ! Wednesday, October 28th they wond the Region Championship and are head to state competition on Monday, November 9th. The Westwood cast was honored with three of the five Best Actor Awards. Gillian Ford as Dorothy,Sarah Holton as the Wicked Witch, and Sara Ann Willingham as Cowardly Lion each received Best Actor Awards for their outstanding performances. Honorable mention awards were given to Betsy Bostick as Glinda the Good Witch, Joseph Dixon as Bach, the Mayor of Munchkinland, Kunjan Patel as Toto, Miller Singleton as Tinman and our ensemble of Trees & Monkeys-Joseph Dixon, Daniel Hays, Tyler Sharp, Mason Worsham, Will Bullard, Pate Council and Jake Kotter. Judges comments from the region competition noted that OZ! was a wonderful show with great choreography, nice energy and fabulous smiles! This is certainly a performance that will entertain the entire family, There is no charge for the Sunday community show, but donations will be gladly accepted at the door.
